America has always been a country on the move. Literally. From the country’s founding on, America’s population has been in constant flux as people search for new opportunities and improved ways of life. Here are 9 Surprising Facts about Moving in America today: Who moves, why they move, where they move…and what it all costs:
- Between 2007 and 2011, the most popular county-to-county move in America was out of L.A. County to either San Bernardino County or Orange County. Apparently, Los Angeles is a nice place to be…from.1
- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, job-related moves are more common for people with jobs than for those without jobs.2
- 35 percent of Americans moved at least once in the last five years. That’s about 110,6000 Americans who needed to fill out change-of-address forms!3
- Nationally, the cost of an interstate move can easily cost $10,000…or more. While the cost of a typical in-city move averages about $1,800 to $2,500.4
- The most popular months in which to move are June, July, and August. It could be because most families prefer to move when their kids are out of school. Likewise, college students tend to move right after graduation.5
- Between 2012 and 2013 more women moved than men. During this period, 18.3 million females moved compared to 17 million males. So if you’re a guy who can’t find a gal, maybe she just moved.2
- In 2011, fewer Americans moved than in any other year since World War II. Not coincidentally, 2011 also posted one of the highest unemployment rates since WWII…nearly 9 percent!3
- Moving is not at stressful as many people think. It ranked 32 on the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale.6
- About 12 percent of the Americans who moved between 2012 and 2013 did so as a result of divorce.2
